Building Our Dream: Choosing the Perfect Design

With a limited space of 21.6m² (7.2m x 3m) - or less; we haven't decided much yet, the equivalent of a studio apartment, I know creating my dream home will require careful planning and smart design choices. Below is an example of the house plan we want, roughly.

Understanding Our Needs, Defining Our Priorities
Thriving on minimalism, I prioritize functionality and a clean aesthetic in my living space. My days consist of a 9-to-6 work schedule, followed by relaxing weekends filled with reading, spending quality time with family, and occasional socializing with friends. To accommodate this lifestyle, my dream tiny home needs to offer three key features: a dedicated workspace for productivity, a cozy sleeping area for rest and rejuvenation, and a compact yet functional kitchen for preparing simple meals. Ample storage is also essential to maintain the clutter-free environment I desire.

Embracing "Smarter Living" Principles
To maximize functionality in my compact space, I'm fully embracing the concept of "smarter living." Here are some key strategies we're incorporating:
  • Multi-functional Furniture: A convertible sofa bed will serve as both our sleeping area and a comfortable space for relaxing and entertaining guests. We'll also utilize ottomans with hidden storage compartments and a foldable table that can be tucked away when not in use.
  • Maximizing Vertical Space: Walls will become our allies, offering ample storage with strategically placed shelves and cabinets. We're also considering installing a Murphy bed, which folds up vertically against the wall, freeing up valuable floor space during the day.
  • Harnessing Natural Light: Large windows and potentially a skylight will be key features, allowing natural light to flood the space, creating a sense of airiness and reducing reliance on artificial lighting.
Finding Inspiration: Muji-inspired Minimalism (and jungle home with a lots of plant!)
  • The Muji-inspired minimalist aesthetic perfectly aligns with our vision for a peaceful and organized haven. Here's how we plan to incorporate this style:
  • Neutral Color Palette: Light and neutral tones like white, beige, and grey will create a sense of openness and tranquility. This approach reflects the natural world and fosters a calming atmosphere.
  • Natural Materials: To add warmth and texture, we'll incorporate furniture and accents made from natural materials like wood and bamboo. These elements will complement the neutral color scheme while injecting a touch of personal style.
  • Functionality Over Clutter: Clean lines and uncluttered surfaces will be paramount. Every item will serve a purpose and be displayed thoughtfully. Regular decluttering and embracing a minimalist mindset will ensure our tiny home feels spacious and organized, reflecting our personal values.
Outside, the family has a large patio area, and for sustainability, I have solar panels in mind. They are not cheap, but for a small house, I guess they're affordable.

This is just the beginning. These are the initial steps in crafting our dream tiny home. We're excited to explore different design options, overcome challenges, and share our journey with you. As we progress, we'll be back with updates, lessons learned, and hopefully, some inspiration for others who share the dream of tiny living.
